Guest WiFi Captive Portal Connection

Is there any way to connect the AirGradient Go or One to guest WiFi networks with captive portals? If not, it would be nice to have a consistent connection at hotels, work, and any other network with captive portals. Even though it adds a security risk.

Hi @jjbonta, the current firmware of the AirGradient ONE (firmware v3.7.0) and AirGradient Go (firmware v1.1.1) doesn’t support working with a Wi-Fi network that has a captive portal. But I think that’s an interesting idea. Could you explain in what situation you think this feature will be helpful? I’m not sure whether most people bring an AirGradient ONE with them to work or travel. I can only imagine a situation where I have to stay at a hotel for a very long time and might want to use Wi-Fi. Would be great to hear more insight from you. Thanks!

Sure! I’ve personally brought my AirGradient One on vacations and small trips out of curiosity when I didn’t have a portable air quality monitor. Sometimes using my phone’s hotspot to connect if there was a captive portal.

Now that I have the Go, I know I can use it off WiFi or connected to my phone through Bluetooth, but sometimes I want to track the data without worrying about the Bluetooth connection. That way it would be a more convenient and reliable connection. If I didn’t feel like tracking my commute on certain days, I can simply show up to work and automatically have a connection that I can look back on for data later. Then when I’m home it does the same thing, all in stationary mode.

I mentioned a related suggestion in one of my private support threads, having the Go switch from stationary to portable and vice versa automatically would help this whole process. Basically whenever a saved WiFi network is available for the Go, it defaults to stationary mode. If there isn’t a saved WiFi network available it defaults to portable. Maybe even automatically connecting to the saved phone through Bluetooth.

@jjbonta , thank you for providing the detailed info! Besides the capability to connect to a Wi-Fi with a captive portal, the idea of your requested feature sounds similar to mogul’s request: AirGradient Go - Bugs/Issues/Feedback - #10 by mogul

I can discuss this with our engineer, and we will think about it. Thank you for your feedback!

Nice, I’m glad there are more people out there with that idea!

That’s a good idea honestly. I would also like to use my Go that way.
