AirGradient Updated Map Interface

AirGradient map seems to be updated to a new interface which breaks a lot of function.

  1. Location service doesn’t work, seems to retrieve generalzied IP location instead

  2. Used to be able to preset a location, type of info viewed, share the link and anyone who press the link will see the same preset. i.e. Taipei at a certain zoom level looking at US AQI. Now every time you open the site/web app from home screen it defaults to Europe

  3. Maybe just me but the map interface, overall font and icon arguably uglier? Top and bottom bar is permanently there

Wonder what everyone else think and if it’s a common issue or just me being nitpicking? Just that a lot of elderly at my place rely on the monitor for their morning exercise and a major revision is challenging for them especially when they’re not so tech literate, especially item 2 is very simplified for them. I do always appreciate the effort of making it better but the previous iteration wasn’t broken right?

Despite that this issue isn’t fixed yet. Anyone know if this is a work in progress or any reason for the major update?

I agree, I’m disappointed that the switch was made with some features being missing from the original map. It was valuable to me being able to see the temperature and humidity for the monitors on the map but unfortunately this is currently implemented.

Since the new map is open source you could open these issues on the GitHub page, might be easier then for the team to address them: GitHub - airgradienthq/airgradient-map: AirGradient Open Source Map

Hi @Kazuki_chen , thanks for your feedback!
It is sad to hear that you were not so happy with the new map implementation, but the important thing about AirGradient is that we are constantly improving our products so I hope you will love the updated functionality in the future.

Let me now address the issues you describe)

  1. We’re have switched to IP-based location detection to eliminate those intrusive permission prompts while still providing the location-based features. This creates a smoother, more reliable experience without sacrificing your privacy.
  2. The functionality to store coordinates, zoom, selected measure is available as it was before, e.g. using this link you should be able to see PM2.5 data in Tokyo in US AQI : https://map.airgradient.com/?zoom=9&long=139.68&lat=35.61&meas=pm_aqi&wind_layer=false&org=ag. Perhaps you could provide some more details on this so that we can investigate the issue further?
  3. The design has been updated to match the general AirGradient brand kit better, which explains some of the changes you’re noticing with fonts and icons.
Regarding the top and bottom bars staying permanently visible - could you help us understand exactly which bars you’re referring to? The more specific details you can provide about what’s bothering you, the better we can address your concerns or explain the reasoning behind these design decisions.

Thanks for your patience with this migration - it was critical due to some technical requirements, but with feedback like yours, we’ll continue making the app better!

Hi @Smithandjosh , thanks for your feedback!
I understand your disappointment, and it’s a pity that you’re missing features that were valuable to you. As mentioned before, we had technical reasons that required replacing the app, but your feedback about temperature and humidity display on the map is very important to us.

Based on feedback like yours, we’ll definitely consider bringing these features back to the map. Thanks for pointing out the GitHub repository as well - that’s a great suggestion for users to submit specific feature requests directly to our development team.

Hi @Nastya_AirGradient, thanks for the swift reply.

Regarding item 2, I just retested and as you said the functionality is still there. When I added to Home Screen, it no longer run like a web app but open the browser in a new tab. So I suspect the issue was, I was trying to open the previously added to Home Screen icon and it defaulted to Europe every time. The link I created previously was initially not working and defaulting to Europe but now it is working fine.

As for the top and bottom bar issue, my apologies that I forgot to upload the image to what I was referring to. This was from the previous version where we had added to Home Screen and used it like a web app.

Seems like most issue could probably be from where we added the map to Home Screen to use like a web app and the new major update broke some things. Might consider putting up a disclaimer to re-add to Home Screen due to the update for those less tech literate or simple announcement about the decision for major revision for users to know whats going on and what to expect during this transition? Just food for thoughts!

As for the location service, not sure if iCloud private relay could be at play here but it is showing me a location >40km away from where I truly am (pin pointing the capital city of the country). Not sure if removing the pesky prompt is worth the trade off but end up some users may just ignore the button and resort to manually searching their location.

Anyway really appreciative for your team effort and consideration on all aspect. Thanks again!

Thanks for the quick response @Nastya_AirGradient

Just another thing I’ve noticed, I’m happy to make a issue in GitHub if best, but when I deployed a new monitor and shared data to be public it would show up instantly onto the map. It no longer appears to be the case?
