What is a reasonable average PM2.5 and TVOC level?

On average throughout my home my PM2.5 and TVOC levels are 35 and 200 respectively. Airgradient scales considerate this moderate but are these average readings from everyone’s experience or should I make efforts to get these down?

Hi @Andrew,

The VOC readings are relative (on a 1-500 scale), and the sensor should be used more to identify trends than as an absolute measurement. Over time, this reading will balance and should sit near 100 (unless there is an increase in VOCs).

As for PM2.5, a measurement of 35ug/m3 is quite high, and I would recommend trying to reduce this if possible. For context, the annual ‘safe’ level recommended by the WHO is 5ug/m3, and the 24-hour ‘safe’ level (which shouldn’t be exceeded more than a few days per year) is 15ug/m3. These guidelines are intended primarily for outdoor air quality, but ideally, levels should be lower indoors.

The EPA guidelines are a bit less stringent, but they also recommend an annual ‘safe’ level of 9ug/m3. 35ug/m3 is far in excess of both guidelines, so I think it’s worth looking into whether you can improve your indoor air quality.

Thank you for your response—it has helped me better understand my observations.

I’ve gathered more data and noticed that my readings have generally decreased over time, though I’m still seeing some peaks and valleys. If I were to share snapshots of my readings over the next week, along with some context about my surroundings, would you be open to providing your thoughts? I’m hoping to gain a clearer understanding of my indoor air quality and how I might improve it.

Thank you,
Andrew

Hi @Andrew,

Sure! Could you please email it to me? You can reach me here: support@airgradient.com.

I would be happy to take a look if you can provide some further details. Thanks!
