Raspberry Pi 5 - Power via USB

Is it possible to power the AirGradient Indoor/Outdoor units with Raspberry Pi5 which has max 1.6A (combined) USB output ?

thanks

Should be no problem. I have even units powered by the usb plug of a WiFi router that probably has much less power.

Thank you , I was just asking because in the technical datasheet

2A 5V USB A Power Plug is Required

  • but actually there is no mention of the maximum power draw

FYI, I measured my Indoor monitor to draw 180 mA maximum.

Hmm. Looking at the board I’m a bit confused here. I see what @gabrieLL mentions also.

There is a voltage regulator on the main board

But this is mostly just to step-down from 5v to 3.3v for some of the components. Others do use 5v, and while I could be misinterpeting things, would be unregulated internally. This would mean generally speaking that a decent quality power source is a good idea.

if Vdroop from the USB power on your Pi is high enough (because it’s consuming enough power from it’s power source), I can see a theoretical situation where the Air Gradient might not get sufficient quality power.

With most RaspberryPi things, you should probably have a powered USB hub to connect things to it.
