I finally got this sensor to put outside (tight budget here), but I am worried about water damage. I get a lot of windy rain and snow throughout the year, and while I can mount this next to my garage, the bottom seems very vulnerable. Under the blue plastic, you can basically see the circuit boards, and the usb-c cable doesn’t create an airtight seal when you push it in. Water could very easily splash from the ground and get into the bottom where I am, and totally fry this thing and ruin what I saved up for. What are you all doing to protect this? Or…aren’t you putting it outside?
Hi @talormanda , I’m glad to hear that you are going to install your new AirGradient Open Air.
For a comprehensive mounting guide, you can take a look at these articles:
- Where should I place the Open Air? | AirGradient Knowledge Base
- How do I mount the Open Air? | AirGradient Knowledge Base
Ideally, it should be mounted in a shaded area.
To prevent water splash from the ground, you may need to mount the Open Air higher up, at least 100cm from the ground.
From my own experience, I installed my Open Air in my semi-shaded balcony (it is directly exposed to the sun at times of the day as I have no better place to mount it), and when there was a windy rain storm, it survived every time.
Here’s what mine looks like:
To add to this, mine has also survived a few snow storms in Kashmir.
To add from my side, I think I haven’t heard of any device broken through water ingress (assuming it was installed correctly).
Correction: There was one installed on a boat for an Antartic mission…
