I have a landfill and some simplistic sorting around 300m from my home and I can feel the smell from there 1-3 days per week. What harmful compounds might be in that air? Which sensors should my air quality sensor should have to detect those harmful things in the air?
hi @ekqgkqqx! It could be VOCs or other landfill gases, but it’s hard to say for sure. Our monitors include a VOC sensor that gives indicative readings, though it’s unclear if it would detect something from 300m away, especially if the wind isn’t carrying it directly.
I only feel the smell when the wind blows my direction. Can the bad smell be detected using PM or only VOCs or it needs some sensors like H₂S, CO, or Methane? Would it be possible to extend Airgradient with some other sensors I can buy separately?
Interesting topic! I hadn’t thought about using AirGradient gear around landfills, but the idea actually makes sense. The mix of gases and dust levels there could be super useful to monitor. Would love to see someone test an outdoor setup with proper shielding — could give some pretty eye-opening data.
