AirGradient Open Air (O-1PST) - Power Consumption & 3rd-party USB Charger Compatibility

Hi folks,

I just want to share my tests regarding the Open Air O1-PST and its USB power consumption and third-party USB power supplies compatibility. Including a test with a power bank. All tested using a USB tester, POWER-Z KM003C.

Generally, AirGradient Open Air’s compatibility with third-party USB power supplies is decent (as all USB-powered devices should be). The Open Air normally uses 1.9-2.8W of power. And it operates properly with input ranges from 5.0V to 5.2V.

Refer to the protocols displayed on the tester’s screen, it works normally with both USB PD3.0 and DCP 1.5A (a part of the USB BC1.2 standard). Normally, almost all standard USB power supplies are equipped with one of these protocols as their charging profiles, so there’s nothing much to worry about. Just remember, there are some weird non-standard USB power supplies out there anyway.

Power supplies mentioned in this post (All compatible):

  1. Cuktech 30W USB-C (AC30S)
  2. Orico 40W USB-A 5 Ports (YC-PE0508000H)
  3. Anker Power Port Mini USB-A 2 Ports (A2620)
  4. generic 5W USB-A (A806A-050100U-EU1) - manufactured by Dongguan Aohai Technology Co., Ltd.
  5. Xiaomi 22.5W USB-A (MDY-11-EP)
  6. Xiaomi Power Bank PB1030ZM (charge and discharge the power bank simultaneously to test using as a UPS for the Open Air)

You can use either a USB A to C (the OG cable) or a USB C to C cable to power the Open Air. I want to point this out because some USB devices, even though they have a USB-C port, don’t work properly with a USB C to C cable because the USB-C power supply cannot detect the device. So these devices need a legacy USB-A power supply and a USB A to A cable only. An example of this case, my beloved Aqara FP2 mmWave human presence sensor, which won’t work with a C to C cable and a C to C power supply without some modification (which I’m not currently capable of, so I’ll just keep sticking with my USB A power supply).

P.S. Forgive me for the poor space management in my workshop showed in the photos, it’s definitely a mess.
