AirGradient Open Air Mounted with 3M Command Hook

Hey folks,

Just want to share something about my small smart home project.

Let’s get started quickly. What I wanted to do was install an AirGradient Open Air in my small bathroom so I can ‘see’ the air.

I realized that it’s not a good idea to put a monitor in a bathroom, since steam from your hot shower might cause the PM reading to spike. Anyway, I don’t usually use hot water in my bathroom (It’s Thailand, the weather here is ridiculously hot all the time).

Since I live in a small rental apartment, I usually want to avoid making holes in the walls as much as possible. So mounting the Open Air with screws behind the bracket is not an option. Mounting on a pole is also not an option; I don’t have a pole or something that I can zip tie it with (without making it look too ugly) in my bathroom.

Usually, my go-to for installing almost all smart home sensors in my place is the 3M Command product.

At first, I was thinking about using a plate like this (below), which has screw heads that fit Open Air’s bracket, but it’s still not a perfect fit.

So I went kind of overengineered (as I usually do in my smart home project). In fact, it could have been a lot easier if I had a 3D printer.

Yes, I just fixed the Open Air to the Command hook with an M3 bolt and nut (through an anti-theft hole of the Open Air).

This 3M Command hook, named Jumbo Utility Hook 17004, which I think is the most cost-effective for my project. It holds up to 3.4kg, so there should be no problem if installed properly.

Then deployed it in my bathroom. Sorry that the place looks a bit ugly and old.

Once it was in place, I powered it up with USB-C cable and everything has been running well so far.

Not bad when mounting alongside the Aqara FP2, right?

That’s all from me today, just a quick 3M Command mounting process, in case it’s useful for someone who’s looking for an alternative way to mount the monitor to a wall.

Note: 3M Command is not designed to be used this way, this is kind of a modification, so be careful about it. Using it improperly could cause injury or property damage.
